Fluorescein Angiography/ICG

ABOUT ANGIOGRAPHY

For some patients, digital imaging technology may not be enough alone to identify a particular condition. Therefore, either used with another diagnostic method or by itself, Dr. Kaushal may perform fluorescein angiography (also known as retinal photography). This is a diagnostic technology using a special fluorescent dye that is injected into a patient’s bloodstream, which will make its way to the retina. The dye will settle in and around the blood vessels in the back of the eye, allowing our team to see how the retina is functioning. Photographs will then be taken of the targeted area to get detailed images so a diagnosis can be made. Comprehensive Retina Consultants of Ocala, FL uses this test to determine the presence of a variety of eye issues including tumors, detachments and tears, retinal vein occlusion, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH FLUORESCEIN ANGIOGRAPHY/ICG

During fluorescein angiography, there are many steps Dr. Kaushal will take to make a diagnosis. He will first dilate the pupils and rest the forehead against a support bar. The patient will be fitted accordingly so that the chin sits comfortably on the built-in chin rest to remain still throughout the test. Using advanced technology, a camera is used to take photos of the components and structures inside the eye. The next step involves the fluorescent dye (fluorescein), which is injected into a vein to enter your bloodstream. This dye helps to highlight the areas of concern. Once the actual dye is in the body, some patients may experience a warming sensation or mild nausea, but these symptoms typically subside quickly. Numerous photos will be taken as the dye spreads into the vessels. To complement this exam, Dr. Kaushal may also perform ICG, which is a test that injects indocyanine green dye in the elbow. This offers another visual effect to further illuminate blood vessels. Using an infrared camera, highly detailed images can be taken to show even the smallest issue that may exist.

FLUORESCEIN ANGIOGRAPHY/ICG AFTER TREATMENT

From the images taken of your eye, Dr. Kaushal will be able to determine the eye disease that is present, as well as develop a course of action based on the stage of the condition. His goal with all patients is to create a treatment plan custom to the individual patient that will provide the best results possible. After a test where dye is injected into the eye, you will most likely need assistance and have someone drive you home. Most patients experience some form of blurry vision for up to 12 hours after the exam. Some discomfort may be felt in the first few hours after the procedure, and the urine will be darker in color as the dye makes its way out of the body.
